Honestly, barely into the new year and I am kind of ENRAGED. In November, my apartment complex was bought by a new leasing company, (hereby referred to as Leasing). A company that seems determined to make payment of rent as difficult as humanly possible for people who have some variety of subsidized housing. (Which I do. An organization I’m going to call Assisted Housing takes care of most of my rent, and I pay a smaller amount.)
Leasing wants me to pay online. I cannot pay online because a lot of the time the check from Assisted Housing does not go through on the first day of the month. (Which is what happened this month, with the New Year.) The reason why I can’t pay online is because the rental portal is set up so that you have to pay the entire amount. I can’t use “Flex” because “Flex” cuts the check into two large chunks. This means I would have to pay 800 something right then and 700 hundred something later, rather than “I pay my amount and then Hom Inc Pays the rest.” I get about 900 something from SSI. I have a bills, and then I have to pay rent. Finally, I have to somehow squeeze in groceries.
(Another super fun thing: I apparently no longer qualify for EBT/Foodstamps. They won’t accept any information I give them about being self employed–more or less–via Patreon. Also they wanted proof of my “bloging” business. Which I gave them, but they say doesn’t count. Yay! Meltdowns are fun! Not.)
LAST MONTH my sister had to pay the rent for me because Leasing decided to shake down Assisted Housing for more money/wanted to change the contract with Assisted Housing. It took to the middle of the month before I was able to re-sign everything, and they lost or “lost” the emotional support letter for my dog.

Next month, they are no longer accepting cashier’s checks, which means–again–that I won’t be able to pay rent on the first or before the fourth, because the only way I’d be able to pay online is if Assisted Housing pays first and I can pay the difference with a debit card. Which did not happen this month, most likely because of the new year. I am SO MAD ABOUT THIS.
I am extremely frustrated with both Assisted Housing and Leasing. The weird restrictions on payment formats, and the fact that they DON’T HAVE A CARD READER for rent payment makes me about 80% certain that Leasing is trying to create loopholes for getting rid of disabled/vulnerable residents who need subsidized housing.
Also: Neither Assisted Housing’s payment nor my cashier’s check has shown up in the renter’s portal. Great, even MORE reason to have a meltdown.
