This is something new I’m going to be trying, daily Pomodoro ficlets. (30 minutes, only a little editing after the 30 minutes are up.) This one is all dialog, and post-apocalyptic, as you do. (They are going to be up on my Patreon first, for paid members!)
“I don’t even know where to start–don’t say the beginning.”
“Well, that’s where most stories start?”
“Yeah but–fuck the beginning pretty much sucks.”
“Then what’s the next thing after the very beginning?”
“He–I brought him in. I took him to infirmary. When he woke up, he damn near wrecked the place. I’m so sorry. I should have just reported it, left him where I found him.”
“No, you did the right thing, the ethically correct thing. He might have died if you hadn’t cached your load and brought him into the Dot. You followed all the quarantine and decontam procedures. It is not your fault that he immediately panicked when he saw the nurse.”
“Is Kyla okay?”
“I have seen Kyla bench press weights three times the weight of a scrawny valit. She was in no danger!”
“Emotionally? She takes things hard, she always has, and–“
“The scrawny valit has a mouth on him, that Kyla and Marc dealt with quickly enough. That’s not on you either, valit are going to valit. There’s nothing to be done about it.”
“Now, can you go back to the beginning?”
“I think so, yes.”
“I was in a town sixty clicks from the Dot. I accidentally ran into a valit scavenging team, only they weren’t scavenging, it looked like they were pursuing another valit.”
