I am currently on Day Four of NaNoWriMo and have written 4000+ words so far. On the Nano Discord server I’m on there are those who have already reached 8000+ or even more. This is discouraging but at the same time not. I have mostly been lurking on the server because that’s what usually happens. I think I’m making somewhat good time, though on the second day I was below the goal of 1667 words. (Two days, I went over the word goal.)
The current project has the working title of Hana’s Demon. I am still working on the summary, but it’s a portal fantasy where a sorcerer accidentally summons a robot instead of a demon, and that robot is befriended by the sorcerer’s twelve year old daughter. (No, this is not an adequate summary, for one thing it needs to be more clearly the point of view of the protagonist, who is the daughter.)
I am managing to follow the story beats, though as usual what I write is slightly different from the beats I originally thought of. (I really don’t write to outlines very well.) My writing pattern for this project is: a)bulleted list of events I want to write for the scene b) attempting to hit the word limit or go over c) record the word count and create a bulleted list of points for the next chapter. It seems to be working, and I may adopt this for writing Lord of the Black Mountain.
I decided to try a new step last night: I put all three of the current sections into one doc and started trying to back-fill each of the sections. This has added maybe a couple hundred words to the overall count.
When I write, I tend to switch between projects because I can only write maybe a handful of words at a time before I get distracted. (It is very seldom that I get the kind of focus where I can write two thousand words just off the top of my head.) I will be attempting to break through my slight block on Lord of the Black Mountain, my Royal Road project. (Though I may end up also poking at the nasty little grimdark lit rpg I’ve been working on. I’d like to also put it on Royal Road but it may or may not be too explicit to put on Royal Road.)
I may or may not post snippets of Hana’s Demon. You can definitely expect more nano-whining as I continue to work on this project. I am hoping that today I can work on both the Nano project and Lord of the Black Mountain.
(And theoretically, the chores I’ve been putting off.)
