With my first blog, way long ago in the first days of Livejournal, I wrote in a variety of topics and included personal stories about my life and with dealing with disability. (Or, before I got actual diagnoses, posts about all the ways I was frustrated due to undiagnosed autism, intense anxiety spirals, various upsetting situations I’ve been in, and chronic illness.) When I started trying to write more professionally for content sites (an endeavor that…did not go well because of the aforementioned undiagnosed autism, intense anxiety spirals and chronic illness) I kept my more variable topics on a separate blog from the “professional” blog.
This…caused problems. The “hello writer’s block I hate you so much” kind of problems. See, I had been told that in order to get an audience I needed to stick to just one topic. And this may or may not be good advice! However, while I do keep wandering back to my special interests (writing, fantasy and science fiction, fairy folklore, mythology, worldbuilding etc.) I am almost never able to keep to one topic. (There was also the part where I am simply unable to come up with the kind of fast glib articles that content providers are supposed to come up with and most of what I wanted to write about is…niche. Very niche.)
As a result of the advice to have just a few limited topics, I ended up with almost no audience, and a great deal of anxiety. My ability to write faltered and soon I wasn’t able to write in either my professional blogs or my fannish main blog. So fast forward to my current “semi-pro” blogging attempts. I currently do book reviews using galley copies obtained via NetGalley. (And also books I just went out and bought.) I am writing meta articles about the books I’m reading. I am somewhat behind on all of my fan fic writing. (I have mostly written fan fiction and I have so many WIPs.) I am also writing original fiction. (Though I seem to be on a slight hiatus thanks to the annual “oh have to re-apply and renew all of my services and also panic a little about them because what if I can’t get them this year and I end up homeless again!” Fun times!)
Currently I seem to be making something of a come back in regard to writing. (See galley and published book reviews, original fiction and so on.) I have wanted to go back to writing the same kind of “personal experiences and so on” writing I did back when I had a Livejournal, in addition to the original fic, the meta articles, reviews and fiction I’ve put up so far.
And very specifically, I don’t want to have to create a secondary blog that I might not end up using.
So, there is going to be a new category: Memoirable. Included in this category:
- Day to day updates and interactions.
- Ongoing adventures with wrangling my health care providers.
- Things that have happened in the past.
- Various special interests that aren’t covered by other categories.
- Various opinions not covered by other categories
- Disability, having mostly invisible disabilities and so on
- my adventures and frustrations with web design as I fiddle with my blogs.
- my adventure with being terrible at graphic design.
